Laura De Mille’s distance from The Sisterhood of Dada is echoed by their own struggle to take action after 30 years and she can be seen to believe that she is not destroying a movement so much as a club.Īs Laura De Mille had seen the writing on the wall regarding how the Metas were going to be treated one way or another, she can see her actions as the best thing for all involved. The Dada movement itself fizzled in the late-1920s as the United States entered the Great Depression and moved towards World War 2. While she was an active member when the Sisterhood were exploring Dadaism in 1917 during the rise of that artistic movement, she has become disillusioned with its focus on absurdity and lack of ability to drive structural change. It is notable that the two primary periods of the Red Scare in the United States began first in 1917, and then in 1947, and it is unlikely that the Doom Patrol writers chose these dates by happenstance and are intentionally drawing a connection between the unwarranted fear of communism to the Bureau of Normalcy’s fear of Metahumans.Īs well as reflecting political changes, the transitions that led to Laura De Mille betraying The Sisterhood of Dada are also tied to the changes in artistic expression that took place before and after World War 2. Her decision to betray The Sisterhood of Dada is both self-serving as she seeks to keep her own secrets hidden and also echoes the toxic environment of the late-1940s as people were encouraged to turn on their fellow civilians as part of McCarthyism and the Red Scare. When another Bureau of Normalcy agent points out that she won’t be able to rise above her position because of her connection to the Metas, she snaps and realizes that her association with them could endanger her own safety. While Doom Patrol showed Laura De Mille as an active member of The Sisterhood of Dada and used her position to help the oppressed, she was still fundamentally complicit in the Bureau’s actions and using the tools of the oppressor. The time jump from 1917 to 1947 is significant as it allows the plot to be influenced by changes that took place around civil rights, race, and communism as the world transitioned from World War 2 to the Cold War era. From the start, De Mille was separate from the rest of The Sisterhood of Dada as her powers were kept secret from the Bureau of Normalcy allowing her to hold higher office and not be discriminated against in the same way. While Doom Patrol season 3, episode 6 “1917 Patrol,” showed Laura De Mille (Michelle Gomez) as a key member of The Sisterhood of Dada, episode 5 “Dada Patrol” had already demonstrated that by 2021 The Sisterhood hated Laura De Mille. To keep this idea alive, Laura De Mille’s motivations have had to be complex and well layered.
In Doom Patrol season 3, episode 7 “Bird Patrol,” it is finally revealed how Laura De Mille betrayed the Sisterhood of Dada, but why did she really do it? Doom Patrol season 3 has kept the line between hero and villain extremely blurred as it is unclear what both Laura De Mille’s and The Sisterhood of Dada’s long-term plans are.
